EMERGING HYCAT™ CATALYST TECHNOLOGY

Dimension Technology Chemical Systems, Inc. (DTCS) has expanded the working boundary of Hycat™ Catalysts.  In a recently issued patent (Reactions Catalyzed By Chromium (III) Carboxylates; US Patent 6,359,147) it was proven that Hycat™ Catalysts have the unique ability to accelerate the reaction of carboxylic acids, anhydrides and imides with other small ring compounds, other than the oxiranes.  Unique polymers and compounds were formed when Hycat™ Catalysts were used to accelerate the reaction of carboxylic acids, anhydrides and imides with oxetanes, aziridines, lactones and thiiranes.  Although the reaction of an anhydride with an alcohol, or polyol, is well known, the use of Hycat™ Catalysts significantly accelerates this reaction and improves the properties of the resulting product.  In just one of many examples, studies at DTCS showed that when Hycat™ Catalysts are used in the reaction of resinous carboxylic acids or anhydrides with polyfunctional aziridines the mechanical properties of the polymers produced are superior to those produced without using Hycat™ Catalyst.  Furthermore, literature now shows that polyoxetanes copolymers are becoming more prevalent.  Problems with these systems are the high temperatures and long reaction periods required to obtain the desired product.  Using Hycat™ Catalysts, the reaction rates are greatly accelerated and the reaction temperatures are greatly reduced.  In other systems, Hycat™ Catalyst were used to accelerate the reaction of polyols with a typical anhydrides (e.g., methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride, maleic, etc.).  This affords the advantage of now conducting polyol-anhydride reactions quickly at lower reaction temperatures, which will improve the characteristics of the final product.

This new technology presents the next step in the preparation of unique polymers and plastics with excellent properties. DTCS invites you ask for additional information or samples of Hycat™ 2000 and Hycat™ 3000 for evaluation in your own area of interest.
